Pregnancy Staples and Cravings

Up to this point, I don't feel like I've had any really strong pregnancy cravings. My food choices have been pretty normal. Last week, I started eating ice and I've been eating it constantly since then. I fill my big cup full of ice, top it off with water and add a spoon to help me get the ice. MMMmmm good!
In recent days I've also had more acid reflux bothering me as my stomache is getting squished and I've kept my Tums by my side. I finished off one bottle of smoothies and I'm well into my second bottle. I don't mind the regular tums but the peppermint smoothie tums sure are good! I highly recommend trying them.
I also recently have been craving one more thing...chalk. Don't worry, I haven't eaten any chalk but the thought of it sure does sound good to me. For those of you who may not know, sometimes pregnant women get cravings for non-food items. The name for this is pica. I guess it can signal some sort of deficiency so I'm going to let my doctor know this week. Some pica cravings are really weird. They frequently include dirt or chalk but can also include rocks, laundry starch, cigarette ashes, and other weird items.
Yesterday, while I was at work, one of the kennel staff came up to me was like, "So you're pregnant?" She had no idea that I was pregnant until someone told her. So, although I definitely look pregnant at this point, I guess not everyone can tell. :) I'm 30 weeks today. 3/4 of the way there! Only 10 weeks to go!

Hey Megs! I love the new photo and YES you look preggers! About the ice and chalk.... it means you are low on your iron! I was eating ice like CRAZY!! Your Doc will probably do a blood test to confirm and prescribe iron pills. While the pills are not fun (think about taking lots of fiber with them), you should have TONS more energy and feel better. My cravings for ice stopped just days later! Please write me if you need anything! Love to you, Ce

i have found that pregnancy is a perfect excuse to crave ice cream. :) especially when the weather is really hot.

Do you wear a smock at work? Maybe that's why. Maybe they can't see through that...
Megan....chalk....ew! Are you serious? That's very strange! Maybe you secretly want to start teaching again :)

Yes...I was going to say the same thing. When you crave/chew on ice it means you are low on iron. =) My Mom used to chew on countless amounts of ice until she found out she was low on iron. Now she doesn't anymore. =)

YES! PICA! I'm glad you noticed that because one known deficiency is with anemia. Do let your doc know....and you'll be fixed up in a jiffy.

And I LOVE the Tums smoothies - I lived on them from like 20 weeks until she was here -

Ahhh...tums. A pregnant woman's best friend! :) It becomes another food group.

Sometimes they replace some of the food groups - ha ha!!!!

So did anyone live on Tums that had a boy? I never had heartburn with Johnny but had it continually with both girls. They did't have Tums smoothies back then and I haven't had more than about five tums since Michelle was born. Guess I've been missing out...

At least ice won't add extra baby pounds like the root beer floats I craved!

Monique is having twin boys and has had really bad heartburn - so I think yes - you can have a boy and have heartburn - :)

I had horrible heartburn with both boys. Tums were my friend :)
