Feeding Time & 6 mo Checkup

This is how Taeya normally looks when she's eating. Here she's trying out her first cereal today.

So, a few of my readers have asked if Taeya is self-fed based on how incredibly covered she was when eating her carrots and avacado. My MIL said, "Stop feeding that girl avacado!" (with a joking voice). For Taeya's credit, she's NOT normally that messy when she eats. When she likes the food, she opens her mouth, takes the bite and swallows it. Very little if any comes back out. She often barely gets anything on her bib. However, when she DOESN'T like a food (such as her carrots and avacado) she eats half of it and spits the other half out and also puts her hands in her mouth a lot, which is why she gets so messy. Once she's messy, she really does a good job spreading it around...rubbing her eyes, playing with her toes (which she does a lot) and pulling more food out of her mouth. Once she's messy, I do tend to let her self-feed a little because it's not going to make her much messier than she already is and she enjoys trying. The avacado and carrots also stick to the spoon a bit more which make it harder for her to fling it across the table at me. So, she does do a little self-feeding but most of the mess is just due to her dislike of those two foods. Most of the foods she's tried she really likes. Tonight she had rice cereal for the first time and LOVED it! She kept leaning forward and opening her mouth trying to get it before it was even on the spoon. It was so cute. She devoured all of her rice cereal in just a couple minutes. I'll have to post some videos of her actually eating so you can see the difference between the foods she likes and those she doesn't.

Taeya had her 6 mo. checkup today. She's a tiny 12.14 lbs and 25 3/4 in long. She's in the 3-5% for weight. We started her on cereal today to try to get her some more calories so we can get her weight up a little. (I'm not worried, she's very well proportioned and is meeting all her developmental milestones. She's just on the small side). It was funny though because the nurse weighed her once and measured her twice and then when the doctor came in he weighed and measured her again...just to make sure it was done correctly the first time. Which it was.

Oh, feeding time is so much fun. Taeya is such a helpful little girl trying to feed herself and everything. I love the pictures. 2 more weeks and I get to see her myself. Yeah!!

she's a very tiny peanut! at steven's 6 month visit, he was 17 pounds (i think) and 29 inches long! (50% for weight, and 94% for height!)

steven likes everything we've given him, but he's not too interested in self-feeding. if i put puffs on my hand for him, he'll bend over and try to eat them off my hand instead of picking them up. what a character!

She is growing! Wow - likes to help feed herself - I am not ready unleash allie on that one - too much of a mess. She does good with bites of things to pick up. So did you not start with cereal for her? Interesting. Have fun with your family there - I know you will have a blast!

SJ-no, we didn't start with cereal because I was told that they no longer say you have to start w/cereal because it can cause constipation. My doctor recommends fruits and veggies and then cereal so the baby has an easier time adjusting to solids. It's worked so far!

Have you seen the mesh baby feeders? We gave Eva a banana using it and she could eat it on her own. Check the product out here - http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2404768

That is great that it worked. Allie has loved cereal since she had it! Fun to watch them try new things and develop likes and dislikes.
